![]() ![]() ![]() The first part of 1066 and All That appeared in Punch on September 10, 1930, taking its title from Robert Graves' autobiography Good-Bye to All That. His collaboration with his old University colleague Yeatman, who was also writing for Punch, appears to have begun in 1928 during his period out of teaching. ![]() Sellar had begun to contribute to Punch in 1925 when three humorous short stories of his were published (he also contributed to other journals around this time). He wrote melancholy poetry in addition to dry humour. Although the two produced brilliant work together, they were entirely different personalities: Sellar was somewhat shy and introverted, although he enjoyed acting. It was at Oriel that he met his contemporary Yeatman, and struck up a lifelong friendship. After serving briefly in World War I as a Second Lieutenant in the King's Own Scottish Borderers, he took a degree in modern history at Oriel College, Oxford (which, as recorded in 1066 and All That, was awarded through an aegrotat in 1922). He won a scholarship to Fettes College where he was Head Boy in 1917. ![]() Sellar was born at Golspie in Sutherland. He is best known for the 1930 book 1066 and All That, a tongue-in-cheek guide to "all the history you can remember," which he wrote together with R. ![]() Corey pen name, actually wrote a Star Wars novel, which I haven’t read.) (The authors, writing under the same James S.A. But I’ve often thought of it more as a literary version of Star Wars, something inspired by decades of prior stories in a genre. ![]() The series has often been compared to Game of Thrones, probably spurred by the fact that one of the series authors used to work for George R.R. But it was done with a more contemporary understanding of science, and with far more character development and diversity than most of that old stuff ever had. This was a series that channeled the old fashioned space opera that I’d read as a boy, mostly in books from the 1940s and 1950s. I know I’ve read all the subsequent ones as they came out. I’m pretty sure I burned through those early books in a few weeks. By then the first three books had already been out. ![]() I discovered the first book of The Expanse series, Leviathan Wakes, back in 2014. ![]() ![]() And I was in the process of discussing what to do next, what job. ![]() I worked in progressive politics at a public-affairs firm. Looking back, I realize that book taught me how to write by failing. After the day job, I would write, most often at night. It was my writing true north for a while. I worked on it when I had a very demanding day job. And I worked on it for years before the M.F.A.
